CENTCOM and Iran trade conflicting accounts of Hormuz tanker strike

The U.S. and Iran are directly contradicting each other over what hit the oil tanker EL GAIA in the Strait of Hormuz — CENTCOM says Iranian missile then drone, the IRGC says mines — with no third-party resolution yet.

Ebola Bundibugyo Outbreak: DRC & Global Response

Four significant claims entered dispute today — none yet corroborated or settled by the record:

  • Newly contested: WHO said the DRC outbreak is on track to surpass the 2014–2016 West Africa epidemic.
  • Newly contested: Africa CDC said transmission has not peaked and could run three times higher than currently known.
  • Newly contested: UN Under-Secretary-General Tom Fletcher said "Ebola is winning in the Democratic Republic of the Congo."
  • Newly contested: A US-brokered DRC–Rwanda peace deal was formalized in Washington in December.

These are asserted but not yet corroborated across outlets. Watch for confirmation.

U.S. Wealth Inequality & the OBBBA

  • Corroboration gain: Lawmakers returning from August recess — now reported by 3 outlets, up from 1.
  • Newly contested: A federal judge (U.S. District Court Judge Indira Talwani) extended a court order blocking USPS from enforcing Trump's mail-in voting executive order.
  • New, contested (3 outlets): The Supreme Court denied the administration's emergency request to clear the way for Trump's mail-in voting restrictions ahead of the midterms.

The two mail-in voting developments are consistent with each other but remain contested pending further record.

US-Saudi Nuclear Deal & Middle East Arms Race

  • Directly disputed, unresolved: Iran's IRGC says the Panama-flagged tanker EL GAIA struck naval mines in the Strait of Hormuz. CENTCOM says the vessel was hit by an Iranian missile last month and struck again by an Iranian drone this weekend off Oman. CENTCOM explicitly characterized the IRGC account as false. Single outlet on each side; no independent verification yet.

USS Abraham Lincoln Crisis & U.S. Military Readiness

  • New, contested: An Omani naval vessel evacuated 23 crew members from the EL GAIA; two crew members remain missing.
  • New, contested: The IRGC's mines claim is also appearing in this issue's coverage — same underlying dispute as above.

The EL GAIA incident is now the thread running through three issues. The core factual question — missile/drone or mines — is unresolved.
